Welcome to the Velvet Room

This place exists between dream and reality, mind and matter. It is a room that only those who are bound by a 'contract' may enter.

Select a game below to see the story and its characters.

Persona 3

Taking place in a fictional location in Japan called Tatsumi Port Island, this game follows a group of high school students trying to cope with, understand and accept death in a world surrounded by it, as well as find their own reasons for living. They form a group called the Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad (SEES) in order to investigate the Dark Hour, a mysterious time period between one day and the next that few people are aware of. During the Dark Hour, SEES explores Tartarus, a large tower containing Shadows, creatures that feed on the minds of humans. To fight the Shadows, each member of SEES is able to summon a Persona, a manifestation of their inner self.

Persona 4

Taking place in a rural town called Inaba, this game follows a group of high school students dealing with a mysterious TV channel dedicated to distorting and exaggerating the truth of who they are and their identities. A string of bizarre murders related to the TV channel begins shaking their once peaceful town. They explore the mysterious world inside the TV and perform rescue missions in order to save its victims from death. Only by looking past what is on the screen, finding and evaluating the truth among a myriad of lies can they hope to find the serial killer and save their town.

Persona 5

Taking place in modern-day Tokyo, the story follows a high school student known by the codename Joker who transfers to a new school after he is framed for assault and put on probation. Over the course of a school year, he and other students awaken to a special power, becoming a group of secret vigilantes known as the Phantom Thieves of Hearts. They explore the Metaverse, a supernatural realm born from humanity's subconscious desires, to steal malevolent intent from the hearts of adults and change their hearts. As with previous games in the series, the party battles enemies known as Shadows using physical manifestations of their psyche known as Personas. The game incorporates role-playing and dungeon crawling elements alongside social simulation scenarios.

Makoto Yuki

Leader of the S.E.E.S Squad

Arcana: The Fool

Persona: Orpheus, Messiah, Thanatos

The protagonist of Persona 3, canonically known as Makoto Yuki (having been used in other media and later confirmed as the default name in the 2023 re-release of Persona 3 Portable), is a transfer student enrolling in Gekkoukan High School in Iwatodai City. He is an orphan whose parents died on the Moonlight Bridge in their car during a fatal incident a decade prior to the game.

He is a silent protagonist, aside from technically speaking in battle in certain instances. While being a silent protagonist, he is very stoic, reserved and calm, gathered by the fact that he's faced death and his own mortality; he remains unmoved when walking under a green sky and being surrounded by blood pools and coffins everywhere at the beginning of Persona 3 or even when guns are pointed at him (such as by Aigis herself). He appears very introverted, distant and aloof since he only observes the conversations of his party members and only speaks when someone is directed at him for his opinion on the matter. At one point, Yukari Takeba raises her voice at him in frustration, calling him "Mr. Perfect" and saying nothing ever fazes him. She then apologizes for her behavior; he comforts her and she says that he "really is one-of-a-kind." His teacher, Isako Toriumi, comments that he is "kinda quiet, but real mature and intense looking (and hawt)" and that he uses proper grammar and punctuation online. Junpei Iori comments that all he does is wander around and talk to people, referencing what is commonly done during gameplay.

Makoto Yuki

Kotone Shiomi

Leader of the S.E.E.S Squad (female counterpart)

Arcana: The Fool

Persona: Orpheus, Messiah, Thanatos

The female protagonist of Persona 3 Portable, canonically known as Kotone Shiomi (having originated from the stage play and later clarified as the default name in the 2023 re-release of the game), is a transfer student enrolling in Gekkoukan High School on Tatsumi Port Island. She is an orphan whose parents died on the Moonlight Bridge in their car during a fatal incident a decade prior to the game.

She is the female counterpart of Makoto Yuki: she is designed to present a fresh perspective for veteran players of the Persona 3 series. Because the rest of the Persona series takes direct reference to the original interpretation of the game involving the male protagonist, her story is effectively non-canonical and takes place in a separate timeline.

Kotone Shiomi

Yukari Takeba

The Healer

Arcana: Lovers

Persona: Io, Isis

Yukari Takeba is a playable character from Persona 3. She is a student at Gekkoukan High School and a member of the Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad.

Despite her cheerful exterior, Yukari is secretly a very lonely girl. Although she deeply values bonds and relationships with others, she's afraid of letting anyone get too close to her with fear that they'll find out about her traumatic past. The protagonist is an exception to this, as the two can relate to each other due to their shared losses. It can be heavily implied Yukari has romantic feelings for him. Eventually, she starts to open up to those around her, particularly Mitsuru, who she initially doesn't like very much but eventually becomes best friends with. As the Social Link ranks, with both protagonist, more specifically the female protagonist she starts to understand what it feels to have a friend her age and gender who understands her and worries about her to even start worrying about other people worrying about her selfishness and her personal problems. Yukari realizing what a friend really means to her is especially shown when her Social Link is maxed, as she hangs out with her fellow female SEES members and encourages Mitsuru to move on from the past. Yukari despises the Dark Hour, and likens being a Persona-user to trading innocence for power, since you can no longer turn away from the things you don't want to see. As a result, she considers being conscious during the Dark Hour to be a curse rather than a blessing, and so is shocked by Strega's willingness to keep it active just because it makes them feel special, calling them "crazy." She has made it her goal to eliminate the Dark Hour no matter what and fulfill her father's dying wish, a desire that only strengthens after receiving her father's true message (the other one had been edited by Ikutsuki), which triggers the evolution of her Persona.

Yukari Takeba

Junpei Iori

The Annoying Guy (at the start of the game atleast)

Arcana: Magician

Persona: Hermes, Trimegistus

Junpei Iori is a character from Persona 3. He is a student at Gekkoukan High School and a member of the Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad.

Junpei is usually portrayed as goofy, perverted, immature and upbeat. He fancies himself a ladies' man and frequently tries to hit on girls, with little to no success. Despite this, he is capable of being kind and caring, and he often cracks jokes and calls people "dude" to make them feel better. After school, he is typically seen indulging in his hobbies of reading manga or playing video games. His bedroom in the dorm is a complete mess with stuff scattered everywhere, as shown in a command console recording when Mitsuru suspects that there had been a robbery in his room, when that is actually what his room always looks like. He is also very reckless and hot-headed and rarely thinks things through, such as when he blindly chases after a Shadow when he, Yukari and the protagonist are on the monorail during the May full moon event, leaving the latter two to fend for themselves until they catch up to him. However, Junpei does have his sensible moments as well, such as when he repeatedly warns Yukari that going to the back alley behind Port Island Station is dangerous, when she considers it an "adventure." His Arcana is the Magician, which fits with his immature personality and tendency to act before he thinks.

Junpei Iori

Mitsuru Kirijo

Heir to the Kirijo Group and founder of SEES

Arcana: Empress

Persona: Penthesilea, Artemisia

Mitsuru Kirijo is a playable character originating from Persona 3. She is heir to the Kirijo Group and a student at Gekkoukan High School during Persona 3.

Mitsuru is calm, confident, mature, responsible, wise and very intelligent despite being a high school student. However, she may be interpreted as slightly arrogant, conceited, cold-hearted or overconfident. As events unfold, this may be a front of maturity, due to her assumed role as the leader of SEES. Her Persona Arcana is the Empress, which fits with the "motherly/older sisterly" role she plays in the group.

Mitsuru Kirijo

Akihiko Sanada

Boxer of SEES

Arcana: Emperor, Star

Persona: Polydeuces, Caesar

Akihiko Sanada is one of the playable characters in Persona 3. He is a student at Gekkoukan High School and a member of the Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad.

A cool and well-respected upperclassman, Akihiko is serious and determined, while also cracking small jokes on occasion. Of all the members of the group, he is the most prone to sarcasm; one instance being if the protagonist talks to him while he and Junpei are taking a break from studying for first semester midterms, where he will state that Junpei isn't studying for his exams as Mitsuru told everyone to go back to their routines. He tends to show excitement for a big challenge, something that eventually rubs off on Junpei. He is eager to train and fight, often to a fault. Early on in the game, while injured due to the Magician full moon Shadow, he will repeatedly express interest in fighting despite being unable to. This draws criticism from Mitsuru, who views Akihiko's eagerness to fight as if he treats their work as a game. At one point, Yukari even accuses him of caring more about having a good fight than doing the right thing. Akihiko is shown to have noble intentions though, not caring about being acknowledged for S.E.E.S.' efforts and chastising Junpei for expecting praise for fighting to save the world. It is later mentioned in a dorm dialogue that he and Shinjiro's goal when they first joined S.E.E.S. had always been to eliminate the Dark Hour. Akihiko is a kind and principled young man who will go out of his way to help someone, being willing to take on additional risk to save Fuuka from Tartarus despite having never met her before, even after Junpei and Yukari pointed out that she had been there for ten days and had most likely not survived.

Akihiko Sanada

Fuuka Yamagishi

Navigator and Support of SEES

Arcana: Priestess

Persona: Lucia, Juno

Fuuka Yamagishi is one of the main characters from Persona 3. She is a student at Gekkoukan High School and a member of the Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad.

Initially, Fuuka is a very reserved, shy and timid girl who rarely speaks up. Before she joined S.E.E.S., this made her an easy target for school bullies, to the point of Natsuki Moriyama locking her in the school gym, which resulted in her getting trapped in Tartarus. However, she is also a friendly student once others open up to her and very kind-hearted, even more so than Yukari. She is very polite, and almost always uses honorifics when addressing people. Usually cool, calm, and collected (particularly in the movie) and despite being quiet and not being involved with fighting and physical combat, she tries to help her friends in any way possible such as using her Persona's abilities to scan the statistics and weaknesses of Shadows, showing her to be very diligent and dedicated. Her Arcana is the Priestess, which fits with her ability to easily contemplate and analyze things. It also reflects her independence, which is shown by her being able to survive in Tartarus for ten hours by herself, when S.E.E.S. were barely able to last an hour in there at that point.

Fuuka Yamagishi

Aigis

Best Robot of the entire Persona series

Arcana: Chariot (Persona), Aeon (Social Link), Fool (The Answer)

Persona: Palladion, Athena, Orpheus (The Answer)

Aigis (romanized as Aegis in Japanese) is a character from Persona 3. She is an Anti-Shadow Suppression Weapon (seemingly the last one in existence) and a member of S.E.E.S. who also attends Gekkoukan High School. She is a machine that gradually awakens to human emotions. She is also the main protagonist of The Answer, the epilogue of FES, and its remake as part of the Persona 3 Reload Expansion Pass, Episode Aigis - The Answer.

Aigis' initial personality is simply a robot designed to obey orders, although she is drawn to the protagonist and states that it is very important for her to be by his side, going so far as to hug them in front of everyone. Her desire to protect the protagonist is so strong, in fact, that she was able to overcome Ikutsuki's programming and free the entire team from their shackles, when Ikutsuki had attempted to sacrifice them to bring forth the Fall. As a result of having no emotions, Aigis' social skills are more-or-less non-existent; it's frequently noted on-screen that while she may look human, she is far from passing as such.

Aigis

Koromaru

Best Dog of the entire Persona series

Arcana: Strength

Persona: Cerberus

Koromaru is a playable character from Persona 3.

Koromaru's personality is based on the famous dog Hachikō. He is kind and has shown extreme loyalty, choosing to stay at his master's shrine long after his death and going for a walk every day like he used to with his master. He is also very protective of the shrine, as shown when he risked his life to defend it, but got seriously injured in the process. According to Aigis, he considers the shrine a sacred place.

Koromaru also exhibits numerous human characteristics, despite being a dog. He exhibits intelligence far above that of most dogs. He is fiercely loyal, and particularly close with Shinjiro Aragaki, who often feeds him special food and takes extra care of him. He is a fan of a show called "The True Battles of Real Men," which exhibits acts of courage from real people. He begs the protagonist to take him to the theater for a special showing of the final episodes of the show. Koromaru whines and runs around after the movie until the protagonist agrees to purchase the boxed set after its release.

Koromaru

Ken Amada

Kid who thinks he's tuff

Arcana: Justice

Persona: Nemesis, Kala-Nemi

Ken Amada is a playable character from Persona 3. He is the youngest member of SEES, and one of the two who doesn't attend Gekkoukan High School until he attends its middle school branch in Persona 4 Arena Ultimax two years later.

Despite his young age, Ken is very intelligent and mature. It is shown that this is a coping mechanism due to the death of his mother at a young age, which more-or-less forced him to give up his childhood. His maturity is noted by Yukari, who can't believe he's in elementary school and claims that Junpei, who is a full six years older than him, could learn a thing or two from him. Fuuka also notes his maturity, and finds him cute as a result of it. Besides being mature, Ken also says several words that boys his age don't usually use, such as "bastard," which he usually uses when referring to Strega. Additionally, he doesn't take kindly to when others underestimate or degrade him due to his age or the fact that he is in elementary school. He is normally very polite to others, and never misses a chance to show respect where respect is due. He is also honest, diligent, and deeply caring towards his peers, particularly the members of SEES. Ken is shown to like and care a great deal for animals, such as Koromaru. In his video recording, There is a hamster in his room. In Persona 3 The Movie, he cares for a goldfish. In Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, it is shown that he and Koromaru are now living together.

Ken Amada

Shinjiro Aragaki

Mitsuru and Akihiko's close friend and one of the founding members of SEES

Arcana: Hierophant, Moon (P3P)

Persona: Castor

Shinjiro Aragaki is a character from Persona 3. He is a student who rarely attends Gekkoukan High School and a founding member of the Specialized Extracurricular Execution Squad.

A reliable and serious character whose cold exterior masks his weaker, gentler self, Shinjiro's difficult past weighs him down, causing him to constantly push others away with a tough-guy act. Ever since accidentally causing the death of Ken's mother, he has given up being a member of SEES to live a normal life, even though there are only so many Persona-users and so SEES needs all the help they can get, something even Yukari, who has no love for SEES or the Dark Hour, has the sense to realize. As he points out to Akihiko, both of them are held back by the guilt of their pasts; they just have completely different ways of dealing with it.

Shinjiro Aragaki

Metis

Aigis' shadow self (from "The Answer")

Arcana: Hierophant

Persona: Psyche

Metis is a character in the playable epilogue of Persona 3 FES, titled The Answer, and its remake as part of the Persona 3 Reload Expansion Pass, Episode Aigis - The Answer. She materializes from a swarm of butterflies in the Iwatodai Dormitory and is known to be fiercely protective of her "sister," Aigis.

Metis has a childlike personality, to the point of being compared to a child by Junpei, something she takes offense to. She recognizes Aigis as her "sister," and as a result tries to protect her from harm. She cares for Aigis deeply and is willing to do anything to protect her, even if it means she'll hate her for it. This is shown when she attempted to kill the other members of SEES, whom she believed (correctly) were responsible for the Abyss of Time's manifestation. She also gets angry when Akihiko suspects her of having an ulterior motive for protecting Aigis, insisting that she's doing it because she cares about her and nothing more.

Metis

Yu Narukami

Leader of the Investigation Team

Arcana: Fool, Judgement, World

Persona: Izanagi, Izanagi-no-Okami

The protagonist of Persona 4, canonically known as Yu Narukami starting with its use in Persona 4 Arena, is a transfer student at Yasogami High School, and resides for a year at Inaba, a rural town.

In Persona 4, he is generally a silent protagonist, as in the series tradition. Except for instances where he audibly speaks when summoning a Persona and so on, with his personality ultimately based on the player's actions and decisions. This is emphasized in Persona 4 Golden, as the Investigation Team members comment on how he doesn't talk much when equipped with the Butler Suit. His dialogue choices within the game are divided by style of expression: normally, all of his statements are inherently truthful in one way or another, but he's practically limited to stating only one thing at a time. Otherwise he may state his opinion in ambiguous moments, such as when discussing the murder cases with the group. One of his most common dialogue options is "That's not true." One of the only aspects that are up to player interpretation surround his past life, such as whether he has any siblings or if he's partaken in hobbies, such as playing instruments or sports.

Yu Narukami

Yosuke Hanamura

Goofy Member of the Investigation Team

Arcana: Magician

Persona: Jiraiya, Susano-o, Takehaya Susano-o (P4A)

Yosuke Hanamura is a playable character from Persona 4. He is the protagonist's classmate at Yasogami High School in Inaba and the son of the Junes Department Store's Inaba branch manager.

Yosuke is a clumsy transfer-student who arrived six months before the protagonist. He is often the target for jokes about his lack of muscles and body strength. He fights with blunt, double-handed objects such as wrenches, but more so knives and kunai. The protagonist first sees him crashing his bike into a garbage can, the first of many times, but the protagonist ignores him. The protagonist only helps him the second time this happens.

At first Yosuke would be extremely considerate and cheery, but that would be a facade in his fear of being alone. Following his confrontation with his Shadow, Yosuke would become more honest with himself as to protect his friends: rather, he would normally come across as insensitive or an outright jerk and unintentionally insulting someone. One of his more common traits is poking fun at Kanji Tatsumi for "being attracted to men," likely wanting Kanji to come to terms with his insecurities surrounding his uncertainties with his sexual orientation and snap out of his confusion. He uses this sharp tongue in a lot of situations, generally being insulting in that sense. He does butt heads with Chie Satonaka at times, who will often criticize him for his rude behavior: she would scold him for constantly making fun of Kanji for something that long became obvious that it wasn't funny.

Yosuke Hanamura

Chie Satonaka

Tomboy Member of the Investigation Team (who loves kung-fu movies)

Arcana: Chariot

Persona: Tomoe, Suzuka Gongen, Haraedo-no-Okami (P4G)

Chie Satonaka is a playable character from Persona 4. An energetic girl with a love of kung-fu movies, she's one of the protagonist's classmates at Yasogami High School.

Chie, in a way, could be considered a "tomboy." She is obsessed with kung fu and is a huge fan of martial arts movies, most prominently Trial of the Dragon. She also has a poster of Bruce Lee in her room. Outside Naoto's dungeon, Chie mentions that as a kid, she had her own secret hideout near the mountain by Yukiko's house where she would pretend that a legendary kung fu master was teaching her special techniques. Chie's wish is to become a police officer some day. Chie's cooking skills are horrific and her cooking tastes generally unpleasant, causing them to be labeled as Mystery Food X. Fitting as an action movie fan, Chie is fond of large amounts of meat, such as grilled steak and beef bowls.

Chie has strong sense of justice and a fierce desire to protect others. She is willing to defend strangers from being threatened and attacked by local delinquents. Even when outnumbered, she does not hesitate to intervene and speak out. Chie wants to protect Yukiko and the protagonist most of all, and they serve as strong motivators in her wanting to become stronger, constantly training her kung-fu moves and challenging herself physically. Though nominally fearless, Chie has some specific childish fears: she is terrified of ghost stories, thunder, locusts (and possibly other insects), and being in the dark.

Chie Satonaka

Yukiko Amagi

Girl who has a fan as her weapon and is popular for her beauty.

Arcana: Priestess

Persona: Konohana Sakuya, Amaterasu, Sumeo-Okami (Ultimate Persona)

Yukiko Amagi is a playable character from Persona 4. She is a second year student at Yasogami High School and one of the protagonist's classmates. Her family runs the Amagi Inn, where she is next in-line as manager.

Yukiko is a reserved, soft-spoken and shy girl, having been raised at an early age to be a prim and proper lady of traditional Japanese customs. At school, she is known for scoring well on exams, earning top grades in her class and often studying the material with her best friend since early childhood, Chie Satonaka.

She is aware of her high-class reputation in Inaba, being the heiress of one of the town’s main attractions, further encouraging her reserved nature. This proves to be a heavy burden on Yukiko, her responsibilities making her feel as though she is inherently worthless outside of her pretty looks and fulfilled obligations.

Yukiko Amagi

Kanji Tatsumi

A guy who has a folding chair as her weapon and is assumed to be queer.

Arcana: Emperor

Persona: Take-Mikazuchi, Rokuten Maou, Takeji Zaiten (P4G)

Kanji Tatsumi is a playable character from Persona 4. He is a first-year student in class 1-3 at Yasogami High School in Inaba and known to many as a notorious delinquent since middle school.

Kanji seems to be a delinquent who was strong enough to fight a biker gang in middle school, earning him a town-wide reputation of wildness and toughness. He drapes his school uniform over his shoulders in a punk-ish style to emphasize the style he wishes to embody. However, when he sometimes gets flustered he tends to threaten people, occasionally getting into fights and scraps.

Regardless, Kanji is a genuinely level-headed guy in spite of all that. The context of Kanji's actions comes from taking care of bad people with his own hands, normally warding off actual bullies and delinquents with his own hands. Kanji grew up with a family that is extremely open-minded and spiritual of the meaning of things, often blurting out spiritual concepts such as "Cloth is alive" or "Dyes are one with the universe," which made Kanji far more thoughtful to an emotional scale. Because of that, although he's grown up masculine, he has a more feminine side, especially prominent in his hobbies. He actually fought down the biker gangs to prove his masculinity and to prevent them from harassing his mother, since he's sort of a mother's boy and cares for her well being more than anyone else. He cares for his mother so much that a simple mention of his mother being in a hospital severely unsettles him. Also, even though Kanji skips classes, he's surprisingly respectful and polite, responding to his peers with manners once he realized they were his upperclassmen; the Japanese script has him use formal verbal tics with the Investigation team until he becomes more comfortable with them overtime.

Kanji Tatsumi

Rise Kujikawa

Navigator of the Investigation Team

Arcana: Lovers

Persona: Himiko, Kanzeon, Kouzeon (P4G)

Rise Kujikawa is one of the main characters from Persona 4. She is a popular idol who returns to Inaba for a brief hiatus. She is a first-year student at Yasogami High School.

Rise is cheerful, outspoken, naughty and cute. Though she is quite boastful about herself, she is very sweet deep down. She is referred to as a "dangerous girl" by Chie Satonaka, due to her boldness in flirting with the protagonist, and her teasing of Yosuke Hanamura and Kanji Tatsumi. Rise is also proud of her beauty and femininity, as she gets offended when Kanji doesn't have a nosebleed upon seeing her in a swimsuit. Rise is quickly annoyed by the smallest things, which ends up with her crying dramatically, and sometimes producing crocodile tears. She's rather childish and possessive; she once pouted and told the protagonist he mustn't call another girl "cute." She has also shown her competitive side on many occasions, and she's mocked Yukiko Amagi’s insecurity and her cooking. Along with Yukiko, and Naoto Shirogane, she cries when the protagonist leaves Inaba, and she'll profess her love to him. This, combined with her Arcana being The Lovers, her flirting and certain scenes in Persona 4 The Animation show her affection for the protagonist. Rise states that she loves the protagonist, and will show a very obvious interest in him during the storyline regardless of her Social Link standing. Her cooking skills, like Chie and Yukiko's, are horrific and she is prone to making overly spicy food, as shown in her omelet that she made for Nanako to celebrate Mitsuo's arrest.

Rise used to be an idol but quit to work at her family business, citing health reasons, after Kanji is rescued. She is stressed out, and tired of show business because she doesn't know if the Rise that everyone admires is the "real" Rise, or the persona of Risette that she presents to the masses. Rise's biggest insecurity is her individuality. She fears that she has no true self and that her career is making her lose it due to constantly putting up fake faces to the general public. While she initially attempts to change this by running away she is left feeling unsatisfied. By the end of the series, she acknowledges all of those supposed fake selves she presented to others were actually just other sides of her true personality. Upon realizing this, she decides to start up her career content that she will be portraying her true self for all to see.

Rise Kujikawa

Teddie

Mascot of the Investigation Team

Arcana: Star

Persona: Kintoki-Douji, Kamui, Kamui-Moshiri (P4G)

Teddie, known as Kuma in the Japanese version, is a playable character in Persona 4 and the game's mascot. Originating from the Midnight Channel, he is empty and without a self, but is the most determined to be a mascot, gradually assimilating himself into society as more endearing for locals and his friends as he faces reality to support his goals.

Being a textbook mascot character: Teddie is usually bubbly and cute and is known to lighten the mood when investigating the case, much like Chie. Possibly due to being a Shadow unfamiliar with the human world, or perhaps due to being a cartoon bear, Teddie has a lot of childish naivety, innocence and is pure of heart. He does not know a lot of human customs, does not know what "scoring a hot stud" means or what a "manwhore" is. This results in him having a lack of social boundaries, such as when he flirts with Chie and Yukiko, although he fails every time. He is also given a lot of people nicknames for himself to remember. In the beginning of Persona 4 The Animation, he acts much like a coward when Shadows are near but changes his ways as the story progresses.

Regardless, later on Teddie begins to play dumb on purpose even if still oblivious to many things, all the while deeply caring about the protagonist and the Investigation Team deep inside, as pointed out by Yosuke Hanamura. Although the rest of the group work together to establish the importance of finding the truth and working together, Teddie gives an optimistic and lighthearted mood to the team.

Teddie

Naoto Shirogane

Detective of the Investigation Team

Arcana: Fortune

Persona: Sukuna-Hikona, Yamato-Takeru, Yamato Sumeragi (P4G)

Naoto Shirogane is a playable character in Persona 4. The fifth generation of the famed Shirogane detectives, Naoto arrives in Inaba to help investigate the murders, and enrolls as a first-year student at Yasogami High School.

Having lost both her parents in a car accident when she was very young, Naoto is an orphan who acts very mature in spite of her age. As a descendant of a respected lineage of famous detectives, she wears formal clothing and deepens her voice when she speaks in a sophisticated, stilted manner. She is generally very serious, focused and mission-oriented.

At first, this seriousness is rigid, unnatural and stubborn due to her secluded nature. This causes her to have trouble getting along with others by adamantly shutting them off, but even then she's not being taken seriously by those she wants to be acknowledged by as she comes across as trying too hard to be an adult. She rarely jokes around which can make her seem like a killjoy or party pooper when the team is involved in silly antics. In Persona 4 Arena, Kanji calls her out on this, saying she is too "uptight" and it makes her seem distant and on a different wavelength. She does get annoyed by the laidback nature of others, responding either with dry annoyance or brushing them off entirely.

Naoto Shirogane

Ren Amamiya/Akira Kurusu (Joker)

Leader of the Phantom Thieves of Hearts

Arcana: Fool, World

Persona: Arsène, Satanael, Raoul (P5R), Picaro Personas (P5R)

The protagonist of Persona 5, canonically named Ren Amamiya, is a second-year transfer student at Shujin Academy, being placed there to continue his academics due to his ongoing probation resulting from being falsely framed for assault.

At the beginning of the game, he has sacrificed himself for the sake of protecting another person, having lost all power or influence in the world as a consequence. However, beneath his quiet demeanor is a strong-willed Wild Card leading the Phantom Thieves and capable of exploiting the Metaverse to affect reality. To his teammates, his code name is Joker, and to the residents of the Velvet Room he is known as the Trickster. The protagonist is the leader of the rebellious Phantom Thieves of Hearts, a group which aims to change society by touching the hearts of people and performing illegal heists.

As per tradition of the Megami Tensei franchise, he is a silent protagonist, whose personality is based on the player's actions and decisions. However, he appears to have more established traits than any of the previous protagonists. His dialogue options range from somewhat indifferent to outright cheeky. The game allows for quite a number of playful, snarky or audacious answers, including teasing his friends. He also taunts his enemies like the famed Arsène Lupin. In the prologue scene, he remains cocky and confident even when his life is in danger. He also has a flair for showing off and making dramatic decisions, such as exiting by jumping through the stained glass windows of the Casino, much to the amazement (and mild annoyance) of the other Phantom Thieves. This is even reflected in gameplay, as when he is turned into a mouse, he makes a flamboyant hop after escaping a battle.

Joker

Ryuji Sakamoto (Skull)

Goofy Member of the Phantom Thieves of Hearts

Arcana: Chariot

Persona: Captain Kidd, Seiten Taisei, William (P5R)

Ryuji Sakamoto is a playable character from Persona 5. He is a student at Shujin Academy and a former track star who lives a double life as a Phantom Thief. He is the protagonist's best friend and the Phantom Thieves' charge commander.

Ryuji is known as a disruptive "problem student" at school whose bad behavior causes all sorts of trouble for the teachers. He is quite proud of his status as a self-proclaimed "troublemaker" and his rebellious, mischievous and disobedient nature are the perfect qualities to be a Phantom Thief. He is sometimes vulgar and aggressive, as shown in his early interactions with the protagonist, Yusuke Kitagawa and Makoto Niijima. He is also rather short-tempered, easily taking offense from even the slightest of comments, making him resort to trying to be threatening.

Though there is truth to his terrible temper, this causes a misunderstanding as there is more than meets the eye, however, as Ryuji is actually upbeat, lazy and even cowardly. Though much of it only comes from his appearance, mannerisms and even his language, his lax nature in itself makes him look worse at times. In certain Mementos dialogue, Ryuji will comment that in trying to keep his eyes peeled for intel, people have told him he looks "even more of an asshole than before."[8] Otherwise, even other party members may misunderstand him in rare cases and think he's being purely a jerk. Even then, from the beginning, Ryuji actively tries his best to be a better person, but overdoes it by showering others with unsolicited kindness.

Ann Takamaki (Panther)

Has a whip as a weapon and is often seen as a foreign student

Arcana: Lovers

Persona: Carmen, Hecate, Célestine (P5R)

Ann Takamaki is a playable character from Persona 5. She is a student at Shujin Academy who lives a double life as a Phantom Thief.

After ridden with guilt over her helplessness to protect others and herself, which led to her letting her best friend Shiho Suzui fall victim to Suguru Kamoshida, she would sacrifice herself to support her friends while facing, overcoming and promising not to return back to her old self.

Ann is a very kind and compassionate girl, enough for it to be noted by both Morgana and Sojiro Sakura. Years of isolation due to her looks have left her very withdrawn, with the belief that she's lost her place in the world, but this hasn't stopped her from opening up to the people close to her and have fun. She's able to press on without caring about the opinions of others due to her friendship with Shiho Suzui, who was her first real friend in Japan before joining the Phantom Thieves. She is shown to be a good judge of character, as she was the first person able to look past the rumors of the protagonist and see him for who he really is. Her good judgement of others is also shown by her willingness to forgive Makoto after learning her side of the story in the incident with Suguru Kamoshida, namely that she wanted to do something but felt powerless to stop him, having realized it wasn't too different from her own situation. Before this, she also comforts Makoto when she calls herself "scum of the Earth" due to her failure to help Kamoshida's victims, saying that if she really was scum, she wouldn't call herself such.

Panther

Morgana (Mona)

Worst Mascot (imo) in the entire Persona Series

Arcana: Magician

Persona: Zorro, Mercurius, Diego (P5R)

Morgana is a major playable character of Persona 5. He is a mysterious being with ties to Mementos. He doesn't know who he is, and seeks answers to restore his memories.

While investigating Palaces, he encounters the protagonist and would have stuck with him since. During the group's activities as Phantom Thieves, Morgana acts as their second-in-command, mascot and guide.[q 1][q 2] To his teammates, he's also known as Mona during missions.

At first glance, Morgana appears to be an ordinary cat, as he meows and self-grooms. While considered to be a cat by the story, aside from the fact he can talk, he's intelligent, talented, down-to-earth and capable and displays many human-like qualities, proving that he has at least a human psyche in spite of his appearance and circumstances. This is acknowledged by the Phantom Thieves of Hearts, who all treat him as a fellow person and reliable teammate.

In simple terms, his personality is prideful: Morgana is chivalrous at heart, and has a polite and eloquent way of speaking, and while having a threatening attitude to make himself appear bigger, he is very gentlemanly towards women. Though he can be mean-spirited, he is generally caring towards the protagonist, and earnestly sympathetic to his situation stemming from a false accusation; to a rare extent, this includes Ryuji as well. He was also shown to consider the ideal person to be a hero figure that helps people in need, which leads him to act gallantly at times. Morgana keeps things fair, conveyed by his settling give-and-take deals between others, and never goes back on his word either, as he promised to guide the protagonist and Ryuji out of Kamoshida's Palace when they first met, on the condition that they free him from his cell.

Mona

Yusuke Kitagawa (Fox)

Zestiest character in the Persona franchise

Arcana: Emperor

Persona: Goemon, Kamu Susano-o, Gorokichi (P5R)

Yusuke Kitagawa is a playable character from Persona 5. He is an art student from Kosei High School who becomes involved with the Phantom Thieves of Hearts.

Yusuke's entire life's passion is comprised of and surrounded by art. He searches for the aesthetic everywhere in his surroundings, from people to places. He sees every opportunity or challenge presented to him as a way to broaden his horizons, and primarily considers how it will benefit him greatly as an artist. He is captivated by the painting of "Sayuri," and seeks to capture the sense of beauty that it portrays. This passion extends to his mentor, Ichiryusai Madarame, who he believed created the painting and who took him in when he was young, completely ignorant that he is being used for Madarame's own profit. As such, Yusuke greatly admired and respected him to the point that he vehemently denied any of the rumors surrounding Madarame.

Even when he knows the rumors are true and finds actual proof supporting it, Yusuke claims that the abuse he faced was consensual as a means of keeping a roof over his head. Even after Madarame's fall, Yusuke still suffers from a serious case of Stockholm syndrome towards his former mentor and still desires for Madarame to revert back into what he thinks he is, even if it is pretty clear that all of Madarame's goodwill was lost right when he was born. In Royal, this is shown when Takuto Maruki's cognition-altering powers create his ideal life, wherein Madarame is an honest and sincere teacher who never took credit for creating the Sayuri and worked tirelessly for Yusuke's mother to receive her rightful acclaim, even putting the unaltered painting in a museum.

Fox

Makoto Niijima (Queen)

Babysitter of the Phantom Thieves of Hearts LMAO

Arcana: Priestess

Persona: Johanna, Anat, Agnes (P5R)

Makoto Niijima is a playable character in Persona 5. She is the younger sister of Sae Niijima and student council president of Shujin Academy and lives a double life as a Phantom Thief.

Despite her position as student council president, Makoto is an extremely unpopular student at Shujin Academy. This is because she did nothing to stop Suguru Kamoshida's abuse, resulting in other students labeling her as an arrogant, selfish control freak who knew about the abuse but chose to ignore it because she only cared about getting a good letter of recommendation. The Phantom Thieves initially assume the same of her. In actuality, this happens because Makoto holds no real authority at Shujin, with her position merely making her a glorified tool for the principal to use however he sees fit. In reality, Makoto wanted to do something against Kamoshida, but was too afraid of the principal meddling with her college record in order to protect the P.E. teacher.

She also is not above keeping secrets from her friends both out of shame and in order to maintain her image. When Akechi reveals to the group that Sae has a Palace, Makoto admits that she knew as much, and she wanted to go there so Sae might repent, but she kept it a secret because she thought it was "too selfish of a reason." Long before this, this trait led to her hiding the true reason why she didn't stand up against Kamoshida.

Queen

Futaba Sakura (Oracle)

Navigator of the Phantom Thieves of Hearts

Arcana: Hermit

Persona: Necronomicon, Prometheus, Al Azif (P5R)

Futaba Sakura is the Navigator of the Phantom Thieves from Persona 5. She is different from the main crew of the Phantom Thieves, as prior to Persona 5 Strikers, she was a shut-in who does not attend school and rarely, if ever, leaves her house.

With a case of social anxiety bordering on agoraphobia developed from the trauma of losing her mother Wakaba Isshiki, combined with her generally introverted personality, Futaba is strongly uncomfortable with going outside. When the protagonist first meets her, she is a shut-in who does not attend school and almost never leaves her room. She communicates with the world remotely via the Internet, and her adoptive father Sojiro Sakura enables her lifestyle out of guilt that he could not protect her from trauma. Having disconnected herself from humanity and the world beyond her apartment, Futaba suffers from suicidal depression, crippling bouts of anxiety and would freak out instantly when seeing unknown people inside Sojiro's house. When first encountered, Futaba is so consumed with self-loathing that she suppresses her desire to live, causing her Shadow Self to develop a much more helpful personality than average, one who only desires Futaba's happiness. Prior to her Change of Heart, she thinks that her room is the only place she actually feels safe to dwell within due to the frequent hallucinations she has about Wakaba bearing hatred on her.

Even before her mother's death, Futaba was quite a lonely child growing up. Part of this was due to her isolation for being a genius, with other students thinking she was a freak due to her eidetic memory (things she's reminded of when she's given a tour of Shujin), while the other part was due to her mother working long hours to support her, meaning the two hardly ever got to spend time together. It got to the point where Futaba would sometimes think her mother cared more about her research than she did about her, an insecurity that only worsened when her mother died and she was read the fake suicide note. Because of her desire for her mother to be alive again, and the belief that she deserves to die, Futaba ended up creating a Palace where her mother wants her dead. With the help of the Phantom Thieves, however, she realizes that the suicide note was forged and manages to remember the real Wakaba. Futaba is also very fond of sushi and Sojiro's curry, both of which were meals she shared with her mother.

Oracle

Haru Okumura (Noir)

Tends to have a sadistic personality behind her prim and proper facade.

Arcana: Empress

Persona: Milady, Astarte, Lucy (P5R)

Haru Okumura is a playable character from Persona 5. She is a wealthy girl who attends Shujin Academy and lives a double life as a Phantom Thief. She is the only daughter of Kunikazu Okumura, the Thieves' fifth major target.

Her life controlled by her father, Haru would look away from the truth of both her own desires and her father's intentions, substituting for vague notions and superficial motivations. Aware of that, she would instead face her desire of freedom and betray him with the support of her newfound friends of the Phantom Thieves.

Haru is generally very shy and reserved. At school, she is viewed as eccentric due to her tendency to keep to herself and avoid contact with others as much as possible. She has serious trust issues, finding it difficult to differentiate between who truly values her as a friend, and who merely wants to use her for her family's status. This is due to her past, where not only friends, but adults and teachers would be kind to her just to please her father and smile at her for their own personal gain. Despite this, Haru is an incredibly kind-hearted girl. She becomes fast friends with all of the Phantom Thieves and is the only member of the group Ryuji Sakamoto doesn't argue with on a regular basis. She can also be very awkward, as shown when she first introduces herself to the others as "Beauty Thief," and forgets parts of the script she has rehearsed with Morgana, to the point of saying "We will take the Treasure!" twice in a row, much to Futaba Sakura's annoyance. She later explains that she was trying to be a "heroine of justice," having grown up admiring female superheroes she watched on TV. She loved them for always fighting to protect others and being happy, desiring to be just like them someday.

Noir

Goro Akechi (Crow)

BEST BOY IN PERSONA 5

Arcana: Justice

Persona: Robin Hood, Loki, Hereward (P5R)

Goro Akechi is a playable character from Persona 5. He is a public celebrity, touted by his fans and the media as the second coming of the detective prince (after the first appeared in Persona 4), and is investigating the mysterious Phantom Thieves of Hearts case sensationalizing Japan.

During the course of the story, Akechi would condemn the Phantom Thieves' actions. He temporarily cooperates with them for professional reasons, using the codename Crow. He also acts as the protagonist's rival. His past having produced inherent feelings of hatred that would become a stigma for him, Akechi tries to perfect himself to be acceptable to others.

In public and with all of his relations, Akechi appears to be well-mannered, friendly, humble and charismatic. His achievement of being a high-school detective, coupled with his handsome features, makes him highly popular among the general public and he is commented to be "The Second Coming of the Detective Prince." His intelligence and smooth-talk earned him enough trust from the police to conduct his own investigation despite his young age, working with Sae Niijima, who fully trusts him to assist her in her investigation.

He presents himself as having a strong sense of justice, disapproving of the Phantom Thieves of Hearts for their methods. He is candid in expressing his disagreement, but he wants to hear about other people's views in an honest fashion. He quotes Hegel on this, citing that "advancement cannot occur without both thesis and antithesis." He finds an interest in the protagonist because he speaks his mind. Much of Akechi's talents have been naturally nurtured thanks to not only his own open-mindedness and effort but also the support from others he has accepted.

Crow

Sumire Yoshizawa (Violet)

BEST GIRL IN PERSONA 5

Arcana: Faith

Persona: Cendrillon, Vanadis, Ella

Sumire Yoshizawa is a playable character from Persona 5 Royal. She is a first-year transfer student at Shujin Academy and a talented gymnast who gets involved with the Phantom Thieves of Hearts. She is overcome with guilt after her older sister Kasumi Yoshizawa gives her life to save her. For most of the game, thanks to Takuto Maruki's cognitive intervention, she believes she is her sister Kasumi.

With the help of the Phantom Thieves, she recovers her true identity, faces up to her guilt, and finds faith in herself. She helps to take down Maruki, who has rewritten reality in an effort to erase all pain and suffering. Her code name is Violet.

Sumire Yoshizawa is a cheerful, elegant and friendly person with a seemingly perfect life, as she received a Shujin scholarship and was (supposedly) nearly uncontested in gymnastic competitions. She also appears to be quite clumsy and careless, as she is shown outright missing the mark at the batting cages even if her reflexes are usually excellent, and she lets her phone's battery run out while texting the protagonist. Despite the fact that she can cook, she is unpredictable and somewhat awkward at it, since she isn't sure about the ingredients, and she often uses stamina replenishing food due to her gymnast tendencies. She has high metabolism, and as such can put away a large amount of food and still ask for seconds. She always refers to her fellow friends as "Senpai" no matter the situation, since she's the youngest member of the Phantom Thieves who has an educative degree.

Despite her supposedly cheerful and bold personality, she sometimes experiences bouts of depression for no apparent reason; usually if the protagonist meets with her, she will end up with a gloomy mood for the slightest of mistakes, regardless if said mistakes are real or perceived. When practicing gymnastics, she also often feels like her body isn't hers and she cannot execute complicated moves properly despite knowing how to perform them.
